April 13, 1970. Mission Control couldn't see the damaged spacecraft. Couldn't touch it. Couldn't test anything directly.

So they built a mirror.

Engineers fed live telemetry into ground simulators, recreating the exact conditions in real time. Every decision was tested on the ground before it was sent up. Try. Fail. Refine. Confirm. Send.

The astronauts came home.

Nobody called it anything at the time. Fifty years later we have a name for it: digital twin.


I've been thinking about this for years -- digital twins as a concept have always struck me as one of the most underutilized ideas in enterprise technology.

But something shifted this week.

I realized we've been describing Private AI the wrong way.

We call it an assistant. A tool. An AI that helps employees work faster.

That's accurate but small.

What Private AI actually becomes -- when it's built right, trained on your context, connected to your processes, grounded in your organizational knowledge -- is something closer to a digital twin.

Not of a machine. Of your people.


Think about what that means.

A digital twin isn't just a model. It's a living replica that reflects actual state. It learns from real operational data. It can be used to test decisions before they're executed.

When your most experienced employee retires, their digital twin stays. The decision patterns they built over twenty years. The context for why things work the way they do. The implicit knowledge that never made it into any document.

It doesn't walk out the door.


This reframe changes what you're actually building.

Not a chatbot behind a firewall. Not a productivity tool with a privacy badge.

An operational layer that captures what your best people know and makes that knowledge persistent, available, and usable -- without dependency on any individual person.

For that to work, the AI has to understand your organization. Not just respond to prompts. Understand your vocabulary. Your process logic. Your definitions of what matters.

That's why the knowledge layer isn't optional. A digital twin that doesn't speak your organizational language isn't a twin. It's a simulation of someone who never worked there.


The governance question also becomes more concrete.

What decisions can a digital twin make autonomously? Which ones still require the human?

That's a cleaner question than "what are our AI risk levels." And it produces cleaner answers.

The goal isn't replacing your people. It's making sure that what they know -- the hard-won institutional knowledge that took years to build -- doesn't disappear when they do.

Private AI, done right, is how you build that.
